Information Interchange in Concurrent-Engineering-Based New Product Development Teams - Model Validation and Prototype Testing — This project has two major parts: (1) Conducting a survey of companies involved in new product development (using concurrent engineering teams) to validate a model of communication and "information interchange" throughout the new product development cycle, and (2) Implementation and evaluation of a prototype information interchange system (software) for new product development with our corporate sponsors.
Preliminary Design Modeling of Assemblies Using Solid Modeling with Minimal Information — Current solid modeling systems require a complete geometric description of all surfaces in solid components. At the preliminary design stage, the designer usually wants to consider the subset of surfaces that interact with other components; the "interface surfaces". Algorithms and data structures are being investigated to all useful processing of this subset of design geometry.
Implementation of a Duct Fitting Loss Coefficient Database — ADesign of duct systems for distribution of heating and cooling air throughout buildings is usually performed using hand calculations. These calculations require the use of printed tables describing the flow characteristics (loss coefficient) of the fittings used to build the duct network. These duct fitting loss coefficients are being compiled into an interactive program to allow rapid and accurate calculation of the fitting characteristics.
Optimal Design of Building Air Distribution (Duct) Systems — A computer program is being developed to perform optimal design of building air duct systems. Two optimization schemes are being investigated: the T-method, and a method based on the method of simulated annealing.
Analysis of Spreading Rollers in Web Handling Systems — Curved axis rollers and concave rollers are used in web handling applications to prevent wrinkling of the web material. A finite element program is being written to predict stresses and deformations in webs passing over these types of rollers. The results of the program are being verified experimentally.
Compensation for Imprecise Inspection Fixtures — Automated inspection systems rely on a precise set of fixtures to locate the part being inspected in a well defined coordinate system. When the fixtures are imprecise, the measurements taken include both the errors manufactured into the part and errors due to poor fixturing. A computational method to determine and remove the fixturing error was developed. The method uses techniques from three-dimensional solid modeling and nonlinear optimization.
