Current and Recent Projects

Control of Mechanical Systems — Advanced nonlinear control strategies are being studied and implemented on experimental hardware to provide both position and velocity control of mechanical systems with tight constraints on speed of response, allowable overshoot, and available control actuation.

Analysis and Control of networked systems — real-time networks are becoming common in many mechanical systems including business machinery and vehicles. Ways of modeling the effects of the network on the entire dynamic system are being studied as well as analysis strategies. It is hoped that a design methodology will evolve which better predicts actual system performance over the 'worst-case' strategies which are currently being used.

Modeling and prediction of hydraulic fracturing pressures — hydraulic fracturing is used to enlarge the rock formations which trap gas and oil many thousands of feet underground. This process is extremely nonlinear and difficult to model because of inaccessibility issues. It is desirable to be able to predict the state of the formation as material is being pumped downhole to alleviate the possibility that the material will seal the fracture rather than enlarge it.
