Current and Recent Projects

Dr.Good has a substantial research program sponsored by the Web Handling Research Center. Specific areas of ongoing research include:

Mechanics of Winding Webs — Products which are made in continuous flat forms(webs) are stored in wound roll form. The winding of webs into rolls causes internal wound roll stresses to develop. This research involves development of modelling techniques to study the internal stresses developed as well as how roll defects relate to these stresses.

Mechanics of Spreading Devices — Spreading devices are often used in web handling systems to keep the web, which is very flexible, from wrinkling and causing web defects. Many "black box" spreading devices have been developed few of which are understood well from a mechanics viewpoint. This research involves determining appropriate models to study the lateral stresses induced by various spreading devices to help design engineers to select the right device and device configuration to prevent web wrinkling.

Web Wrinkling Instability — Web wrinkling occurs when compressive stresses develop in the web which will lead to compressive buckling. The compressive stresses may result from several causes including web shear, anisotropic materials, and variations in web tension across the web width or along the web length. This research is involved with studying the magnitude of the compressive stresses resulting from various causes as well as the buckling strength of the web. The objective is to be able to predict wrinkling and to understand what steps can be taken to prevent it.

Web Traction — Web traction is all important in web handling. Lack of traction can cause roll slippage defects, web wrinkling, lateral and longitudinal dynamics problems, and can prevent spreading devices from performing as desired. This research is involved with determining algorithms which will predict the available traction as functions of web velocity, web and roll surface roughness, roll diameter, web tension, etc.. This is a massive empirical study which will lead to generic empirical algorithms.

Most of Dr. Good's research is concerned with the development of analytical and experimental techniques to study mechanics and dynamics phenomena.
